Same Sandwich Name, Wildly Different Calorie Counts
Subway markets itself as the healthier fast food option, and it can be — but the range is enormous. A 6-inch Veggie Delite on a lettuce wrap with mustard lands under 200 calories. A footlong Spicy Italian with extra mayo and double cheese can clear 1,100. Same brand, same counter, completely different meal depending on four or five choices you make in about thirty seconds.
Build your actual order below instead of guessing from a generic “Subway sandwich calories” number that assumes defaults nobody actually orders.
What Actually Drives the Number
- Size. Footlong is almost exactly double the 6-inch across the board. This is the single biggest lever before you’ve touched anything else.
- Bread. Ranges from 200 calories (Italian white, 6-inch) down to 10 (lettuce wrap). Wraps and flatbread sit around 220–240.
- Protein. Veggie Delite (45 cal) and turkey (60 cal) sit at the bottom. Meatball Marinara (180 cal) is the heaviest standard option.
- Cheese. A flat 40–50 calories per 6-inch regardless of type — small, but it adds up if you’re also adding sauce and bacon.
- Sauce. This is where people get caught out. Mayo and ranch both run about 110 calories on a 6-inch — 220 on a footlong. Mustard is 5.
- Toppings. Vegetables cost almost nothing (5–15 cal each). Avocado (60) and bacon (45) are the two toppings that actually matter calorie-wise.
🥖 Swap mayo for mustard on a footlong and you’ve cut 210 calories before touching anything else. Swap meatball for turkey and that’s another 240 gone. Two changes, same sandwich shape, 450 fewer calories.

Keeping the Order Light
- Bread: Lettuce wrap or flatbread saves 190–250 calories over regular bread.
- Protein: Turkey or veggie are the two lowest-calorie fillings on the menu.
- Sauce: Mustard or buffalo instead of mayo, ranch, or chipotle southwest.
- Toppings: Load up on the free vegetables — they add volume and flavor for almost nothing.
- Cheese: Skip it, or pick American — the lightest option at 40 calories for a 6-inch.
